Silly Love Songs

Following the (not quite) tradition - begun with The Partridge Family and the always popular David Cassidy (who will be appearing at Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun, I forget which, soon) - next in the line of great love songs is The Turtles' "Elenore". Always a crowd pleaser, and one which has been stuck in my head for two days since I heard it on the Shaw's overhead music while I was shopping for yogurt and cold medicine. Feel free to have this stuck in your brain a while, too.

You got a thing about you
(Get it off! Get it off!)
I just can't live without you
(Okay, I have a real problem with this one. You can't live without water, oxygen or shelter. You don't WANT to live without me.)
I really want you, Elenore, near me
(My mother used to say that when we were in busy places. I want you near me at all times, please.)
Your looks intoxicate me
(Okay, intoxicate...that's pretty nice.)
Even though your folks hate me
(What do my folks hating you have to do with my intoxicating looks?)
There's no one like you, Elenore, really

[Chorus:]
Elenore, gee I think you're swell
(Golly gee willikers, Jimmy, I think you're dreamy, too!)
And you really do me well
(Need I really comment on this one or are we all thinking on the same page here?)
You're my pride and joy, et cetera
(Please listen to the following options as they have recently changed: Press One if your baby is your pride and joy, press two if your baby thinks he loves you, press three if your baby loves to shimmy, press four...)
Elenore, can I take the time
To ask you to speak your mind
(Wow, how generous of you - are you sure that won't be taking too much away from your busy schedule?)
Tell me that you love me better
(than...? Ingrown toenails? Sure. The dentist? Absolutely. Barbershop? Hmmm....)

I really think you're groovy
Let's go out to a movie
(Which one were they trying to rhyme: movie or groovy?)
What do you say, now, Elenore, can we?
They'll turn the lights way down low
Maybe we won't watch the show
(Because you really do me well)
I think I love you, Elenore, love me
(Men will say anything...)

[Chorus:]
Elenore, gee I think you're swell
And you really do me well
You're my pride and joy, et cetera
Elenore, can I take the time
To ask you to speak your mind
Tell me that you love me better

Elenore, gee I think you're swell ah-hah
Elenore, gee I think you're swell ah-hah
Hah
